Clumping Bamboo
Clumping bamboos exhibit a predictable growth pattern, which facilitates their management in gardens and landscapes. Their U-shaped rhizomes grow minimally outward, typically just a few inches from the base clump each season. This trait, combined with the compact arrangement of their canes, allows for substantial lateral coverage without the invasiveness associated with running bamboo varieties.
With their typically shorter height and dense growth habit, clumping bamboos provide an excellent option for creating a low-maintenance, visually appealing grove or potted feature plant. This makes them suitable for a variety of landscaping needs, from privacy screens to ornamental barriers.

Running Bamboos
Running bamboo refers to over 100 types that grow 3-40 feet tall in the Northwest/Puget Sound climate. They get their name from their root system, which can spread and create new shoots. However, there are effective ways to manage and contain these bamboos. Every planting situation is different, and we are here to assist you in choosing the best varieties and containment methods.
Mid-Sized Running Bamboo
Mid-sized running bamboos can provide 15’ - 25’ of dense privacy screen. They generally form a dense grove of canes up to 2” in diameter.
Phyllostachys aurea ‘Inversa’
Timber Running Bamboo
Timber bamboos can reach 25’ - 40’ tall in Western Washington if given enough space and time. Canes over 2” in diameter often branch higher, making them suitable for second-story privacy. These bamboos have strong root systems and need careful planning and management before planting.
