Phyllostachys dulcis

Phyllostachys dulcis quick facts

  • Running timber form of bamboo

  • Average Seattle-area height: 20-25’ (in ground)

  • Full sun - mostly shade

  • A top choice for a compact timber-sized grove

  • Green - slightly bluish canes with distinct white node

  • Nicknamed “Sweet Shoot” for its sugary, non-acrid edible shoots

Phyllostachys dulcis is an excellent consideration for a bamboo that can produce strong, thick canes in a residential setting. It produces very strong and straight, 2-3” diameter canes and eventually forms an open, airy grove. Shorter, wide leaves create an attractive and tropical looking canopy for solid privacy above the fence line. In a less amount of time (along with Phyllostachys vivax), dulcis has the capacity to produce large canes in a smaller area than most other timber bamboo.
