Fargesia jiuzhaigou I ‘Red Dragon’
Fargesia jiuzhaigou is a species of clumping bamboo that includes many sub-varieties. In general, it forms a mostly upright 8’ - 12’, compact and dense grove of colorful canes and slender leaves. ‘Red Dragon’ is so-named for the purplish-red color the canes turn as they mature, making it a great choice for ornamental containers or a garden feature plant.
Height:
10-12’ when planted in the ground.
Light requirements:
Prefers a light amount of dappled, late afternoon shade
Growth Habit:
New shoots appear in early spring and late summer.
A pot of jiuzhaigou planted in the ground can expand a foot or so in annual circumference. 6 feet of diameter is a recommended minimum for uncrowded, healthy growth.
Mowing and/or line trimming is an effective means to curtail spread. Planting in a one foot mound of soil can further help maintain the shape of the grove.
Characteristic highlight: ‘Red Dragon’ is known for the striking color changes of its slender canes as it matures, developing shades of deep orange, red and purple. Its mint green, fine, narrow leaves give the plant a delicate, elegant appearance.
