  • Full sun - mostly shade

  • Cold hardy and evergreen

  • A top choice for containers

  • Dense growth provides total privacy

Phyllostachys aurea ‘Golden’ bamboo is a top choice for creating a residential privacy screen and noise barrier. It’s recognizable by the bulbous appearance of the base of the canes that produce low branches and a dense leaf growth. New canes emerge a a deep green and gradually fade to a golden yellow when exposed to full sun.

Golden bamboo performs particularly well in raised containers and large pots. It forms a compact root ball that produces a tight array of canes and can live comfortably in confinement for years. Branches can be permanently clipped out as wanted for a more airy effect.

Overall, it’s among the hardiest and forgiving varieties to grow in Western Washington. It does well in full summer sun and really thrives in any amount of shade.

Growth Habit

Golden is a running bamboo and needs to be properly contained with an official root barrier and/or mound and trench strategy. It’s very important to do some forethought and study or consult a verified local expert before planting running bamboo in the ground
