Fargesia jiuzhaigou ‘Genf’
Fargesia jiuzhaigou 'Genf' is a beautiful and highly ornamental clumping bamboo, beloved for its graceful appearance and cold hardiness.
Size:
Height: Typically reaches 8–12 feet (2.5–3.5 meters)
Spread: Forms a dense clump about 3–5 feet wide over time
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast in ideal conditions
Canes: Slender, upright, reddish to purple when young, maturing to greenish-yellow or golden hues, especially in sun
Light requirements:
Light: Prefers partial shade, but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates (more shade needed in hot, dry areas)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 5–9
Cold Tolerance: Very hardy for a bamboo; can tolerate temperatures down to around -20°F (-28°C)
Growth Habit:
New shoots appear in early spring and late summer.
A pot of jiuzhaigou planted in the ground can expand a foot or so in annual circumference. 6 feet of diameter is a recommended minimum for uncrowded, healthy growth.
Mowing and/or line trimming is an effective means to curtail spread. Planting in a one foot mound of soil can further help maintain the shape of the grove.
